Rotary Club of King awards students for character excellence They were selected to receive the award from members of the class of 2017 because of their academic excellence, service to the school and community.
At a weekly club meeting held on May 4, the Rotary Club of King (Stokes County, US, District 7690) honoured Zackary Young and Berenice Perez, third and fourth-quarter recipients of the club’s “Good Citizen of the Quarter” award.
These students were selected to receive this award from members of the class of 2017 because of their academic excellence, service to the school and community, and demonstrated positive character traits.
Zackary Young, son of Craig and Catrina Young, is an honour student who is involved in various student organisations including Fellowship of Christian Students, National Honour Society, and Beta Club.
He is an artist whose paintings have been displayed in the Stokes Arts Council and a vocalist who sings for various school and community events.
Young plans to begin his college experience at Western Carolina University in the fall of this year to study electrical engineering.
Berenice Perez, daughter of Benito Perez and Maria Hermenegildo of King, is also an honour student, having completed several advanced academic and advanced placement courses.
She is a member of the National Honour Society, Beta Club and Interact Club.
Through her involvement in the Interact Club, she has participated for the past four years in the Purple Pinkie Campaign (worldwide polio eradication), special projects for local long-term health care facilities, an annual promo for special needs citizens, the Feed Stokes 5K/Half Marathon race to benefit needy families in Stokes County, and King Fest.
Perez will enroll in Salem College this fall to pursue a degree in Spanish.
At the end of the school year, one of the four recipients of the “Good Citizen of the Quarter” award will be chosen by the Rotary Club of King to receive a $1,000 scholarship renewable for three years, and the other three will receive a $350 one-time award.
Funding for all scholarships is supported by donations from club members and community participation in the club’s annual fundraiser held in September.
