The Rotary Club of Newlands (Cape Town, South Africa — District 9350) has launched its first E-club which will enable its members to interact despite their locations.

The Rotary E-club of Greater Cape Town for District 9350 was launched in July.

It is made up of 23 members who are reportedly having busy schedules and have been struggling to attend the weekly meetings.

Now, they will be linked through the club’s Zoom online platform for 20 minutes every second Wednesday of the month at 7 pm and every fourth Thursday of the month at 12.30 pm.

Graham Finlayson, President, Rotary Club of Newlands, says living in a digital world made them realise the necessity to move with the time.

He says: “There are many people who would like to become part of Rotary, however, due to work commitments they are not always able to physically attend the meetings.”

“Through this E-club, we believe we are casting our net wider to give more people an opportunity to become part of a web-based Rotary club. It aims to reduce boundaries and be even more inclusive.”

New president for the E-club, Peter Dekker, added that its purpose “is to connect, inform, inspire, and involve different members of society who are eager to embrace Rotary’s ethos of service above.”

“We are excited about this new e-chapter for Rotary. It seems that the idea of an E-club is also more attractive to younger people and this helps the rejuvenation of the Rotary as a whole.”

He says the E-club will run in the same manner as a traditional Rotary meeting. Membership costs Rand 1,500 per annum.

One of the members of the E-club, Andre Du Toit, says he is happy to be part of the E-club. “For years I have always wanted to join the club but one of the rules is that you have to meet every week. Due to the nature of my work I have not been able to.”

“This is a brilliant idea and it will be a success. We can meet from wherever we are. Its meetings are short and it will attract international speakers to our meetings.”

The new members and guests can link up by clicking the link on www.rotaryeclubgreatercapetown.org.

The E-club will run in the same manner as a traditional Rotary meeting, with the only difference being that members will be joining the meeting via online meeting platform Zoom.
