Seven guests were invited to lunch with members of the Rotary Club of Crediton (UK, District 1175), all to receive cheques in support of their charities.

The presentations were made by Paul Evans, immediate past president, at the club’s regular lunch at Sandford Cricket Club.

They were part of more than £9,000 given away by the club this year as well as two ShelterBoxes at £600 each.

Donations at the lunch went to Helen Olsson for the First Crediton Scouts, Brian Shillingford for Age Concern, Geoff Fox who represented Crediton Arts Centre, Ann Macbeth for Hospiscare and Sheila Ralph received a cheque on behalf of FORCE.

Donations also went to Third Crediton Guides and Sandford Scouts whose representatives were not able to be at the lunch.

Over the year the club has supported Ruth Lemon whose parents live in the Teign Valley but, over the past nine years Ruth has been working in Cambodia where the Crediton Rotary has provided writing materials for a year for the 1,000-pupil school as from the start of the new academic year in October.

The club has already provided money to help build a library in one of the villages and any money left over from this will go towards a new hydroponic scheme with another school.

In addition, the club has also sent £500 to Rotary International towards eradicating polio.

Over the past 30 years Rotary International has raised more than £1 billion towards this.

The club has also sent money to its own Rotary charity, the Foundation charity, an education charity.
