Annual fishing derby hosted by Rotary club Rotarians hosted 24 special needs students from the Southgate Community School who were all given the opportunity to enjoy the day by the water.
More than two dozen people gathered for the 28th Annual Fishing Derby organised by Southgate Rotary (Michigan, US — District 6400) recently.
The Rotarians hosted 24 special needs students from the Southgate Community School District, who were all given the opportunity to enjoy the day by the water.
The event was started by Mary Yurko and Barbara Heston, and is now run by Heston’s daughters Kelly Dwyer and Heidi Umin.
Southgatet teachers, aides, parents and Rotarians worked together in a one on one setting to teach the children the about fishing.
The event was held at Michigan Memorial Park in Huron township.
The accompanying picnic and field games were held at the John P Heston Recreation Area.
Steve Ahles took point on the day of the event to coordinate volunteers and donations.
Marathon donated safety hats and glasses for the fishermen and women and the Holiday Inn and Sam’s Club combined to provide lunch for everyone.
Trinity Transportation provided a bus to get the students from the school to the event and back.
