Every month for the past three years, the Lake Zurich Rotary Club (Illinois, US — District 6440) has donated new and gently-used books to children whose families use the St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry.

The next book giveaway will be on July 20.

“The kids and families really appreciate getting the books and school supplies,” says Joe Kulba, president of the Rotary Club and current leader of the book giveaway.

“If they can’t afford to buy food, they won’t be able to buy books for their homes.”

Research shows that families who provide books for their children find that they soon read at grade level or above.

Cookbooks and dictionaries are also popular at the giveaway, notes Nancy Shepherdson, member of the Lake Zurich Rotary, who started the programme.

Some well-to-do families probably have books that they no longer want. And if they have such unwanted childrens’ books, dictionaries or cookbooks, these families can donate them to the book giveaway.
