Rotary offers birth packs to pregnant teens The local club joined hands with Unisa Social Work Department to donate birth packs to 16 pregnant teenagers from Ga-Kolopo village in South Africa.
Raising a baby is not easy, and the costs accompanied accumulated during and after pregnancy can become an issue for many.
Sometimes, news of pregnancy comes as a surprise and leaves little time to budget and buy everything required for the big arrival.
For this reason, Rotary Club of Polokwane (South Africa, District 9400) and Unisa Social Work Department came together to donate birth packs to 16 pregnant teenagers from Ga–Kolopo village in Aganang Local Municipality.
Yvonne Joubert of Rotary club pointed out they emulated the spirit of Mother Teresa by making the donation to the needy and vulnerable mothers to be.
“The birth packs included nappies, warm clothes as well as baby oils,” she says.
Brian Tigere, Unisa Social Work Supervisor, said it is part of the social work curriculum for students to do community projects based on the needs and social problems of their communities.
“One of the students, Phuti Kanama, identified the problem of teenage pregnancy in her community hence the partnership with Rotary Club,” Brian told Review.
